WELCOME TO THE MODERN LANGUAGES PROGRAM AT UTAH TECH UNIVERSITY!

The modern languages program develops proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing to prepare students for any kind of language endeavor, as well as to provide all students with the opportunity to develop social and academic linguistic proficiency in a language other than English. Through this experience students see the connections between the study of language and other disciplines, gain greater insight into the cultural aspects of the people who speak the target language, meet a qualification for entrance in a wide choice of colleges and universities, and expand their employment opportunities in the competitive global workforce.

Spanish

The program in Spanish at UT allows students to immerse themselves in any Spanish-speaking culture. They will be able to use these necessary skills for research, translating and teaching not only the language, but also the literature and the culture of Spanish-speaking country in both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. For some students, a humanities degree is an entry step into graduate school. Several students have been accepted into careers in the medical field after completing a degree in Spanish. We also have several students who are working as secondary education teachers, or elementary teachers in the Dual Language Immersion program.

American Sign Language Interpreting

Utah Tech University’s American Sign Language Interpreting program is unique in southern Utah. In addition to language acquisition classes, students take classes in Deaf Culture and Interpreting. Students learn crucial communication skills such as cultural awareness and sensitivity, register and code switching, and the ability to be lifelong learners. Furthermore, they develop cultural and linguistic knowledge to navigate various social, professional and educational environments as cultural and linguistic liaisons. This program aims to prepare graduates to pass the Utah Novice Interpreting Exam.

Japanese

The Japanese program develops proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing to prepare students for any kind of language endeavor, as well as to provide all students with the opportunity to develop social and academic linguistic proficiency in a language other than English. The Japanese program includes both lower and upper-division courses to serve those just beginning as well as those with more advanced experience in the language. Students in the Japanese program may also be able to participate in exchange programs with affiliated institutions in Japan such as Meijo University.

The Chinese program includes both lower and upper-division courses to serve those just beginning as well as those with more advanced experience in the language.

French

The French program develops proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing to prepare students for any kind of language endeavor, as well as to provide all students with the opportunity to develop social and academic linguistic proficiency in a language other than English. The French program offers courses at the undergraduate level to fulfill the requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree.
